WHAT IS MACA?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a finicky root, similar to a turnip or radish, that only grows well in the cold, arid climates of high mountain plateaus, and in soil that is inhospitable to most other crops. It is native to the Peruvian Andes and grows at altitudes of 11,000 feet (3500 m) and above. This makes it the highest growing food crop in the world. In The Peruvian Andes, it is still cultivated and carried to the villages below to be dried and ground into organic maca powder. And nutrition-wise, maca powder benefits are pretty impressive. One-half teaspoon (2.5 grams) of maca powder has around 10 percent of your daily iron needs, 10 percent of your recommended vitamin C, and about 15 percent of your copper needs—all for just 10 calories.

MACA HISTORY

Maca has been used for centuries in the Andes for nutrition and to enhance the fertility of both humans and animals. Maca was probably domesticated between 1300 and 2000 years ago in San Blas, Junin (present day Peru) by Incan farmers. It is believed to have been traditionally consumed by ancient Incan warriors just prior to battle, giving them superior endurance and strength.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF MACA POWDER

  • Increase Energy and Stamina

Maca has maintained a reputation for boosting energy. What’s interesting, though, as compared with coffee and tea, Maca does not stress the adrenals. The energy boost felt from Maca is both even and sustained. Maca powder works by nourishing the adrenal glands, which regulate the hormones involved in energy production. It has been claimed to help you gain muscle, increase strength, boost energy and improve exercise performance.

One small study in eight male cyclists found that they improved the time it took them to complete a nearly 25-mile (40-km) bike ride after 14 days of supplementing with maca extract.

  • Reduce Anxiety and depression

Recent studies have also shown that Maca’s positive effects on mood lead to a reduction in self perceived anxiety and stress. That makes Maca very unique, in the sense that it boosts energy without causing any sort of stress.  As an adaptogenic root, maca powder strengthens our ability to deal with stress and manage anxiety.  Adding a few teaspoons of maca powder to your diet can help balance stress hormones.

Taken regularly, Maca works to elevate emotional mood. This is most likely a function of the dense nutrition within the root combined with it’s hormone balancing properties and unique nutrients called macamides.

  • Enhance memory and learning

Maca may improve brain function. In fact, it has traditionally been used by natives in Peru to improve children's performance in school. In animal studies, maca has improved learning and memory in rodents that have memory impairment. Maca is safe for both children and adults and is a great addition to any student’s diet.

  • Improve libido and fertility

Reduced sexual desire is a common problem among adults. Traditionally, Maca has been regarded as a potent aphrodesiac among the native Peruvian population. One study also has shown that Maca can help men overcome erectile dysfunction.

Other research has found maca may improve sperm count and motility in men. And some early research even suggests that taking maca slightly improves sexual dysfunction in women taking antidepressants.

  • Hair Growth

Traditionally, Maca has been used to stimulate the growth of hair as well as to prevent hair loss.

WHAT DOES MACA TASTE LIKE ?

Organic maca powder has a mildly sweet and pleasant butterscotch flavor, which makes it easy to incorporate into everyday drinks and food.

HOW TO TAKE MACA ?

We typically recommend simply blending Maca powder in smoothies or simple drinks and to enjoy it  because it adds plenty of nutrients without overwhelming the flavor. Maca works well  with cappuccinos, guacamole, or hummus thanks to its nutty flavor and butterscotch aroma. You can also mix it into your energy balls and homemade granola bars, or add to soups and stews. Maca powder is a great complement to oatmeal and other hot morning cereals, and powdered maca is even sweet enough to blend into milkshakes or stir into hot chocolate.

The dosage of maca powder used in studies generally ranges from 1.5–5 grams per day. You can take Maca all at once one time per day, (the best in the morning) or spread it out several times during the day, it is up to you, whichever you prefer.

Maca powder can be stored at room temperature for up to 24 months and up to 2 1/2 years in the freezer.

Store in a cool dry place for up to 24 months. It is ok to refrigerate.

Country of origin: Peru.

SIDE EFFECTS

Do not use while pregnant or breastfeeding due to lack of safety data. If you have liver or kidney disease, always clear the use of supplements with your doctor.
